Lots of great photos were taken of this event. For our international visitors to this website, Lanark Lanimers is one of Scotland's oldest festivals, which was celebrating its 865th birthday this year. The last time our DJ Art was at the Lanimers was when he was doing Technical Op and a bit of presentation for the Clan FM road-show, back in the year 2000. The weather wasn't very good back then and so the celebrations in Castlebank Park passed with only a small attendance. However, this year the sun shone brightly and thousands of people came to the park, after seeing the procession and crowning of Lanimer Queen Kirsty, to enjoy some fun, games and performances from bands and even a re-enactment of an infamous battle that took place near Lanark during the wars of independence in the 14th Century (see the movie Braveheart, starring Mel Gibson - for a sketchy history lesson). Throughout the park were prize-winning stalls, the Army Cadets (who brought along an assault course for aspiring soldiers to participate in), a fortune teller, an archery range, fairground rides, a very large marquee, lots of sunbathers and an entertainments arena, where we were. Although only half of the park could hear us (allowing others to enjoy some peace and quiet elsewhere), we were still very loud. We even had people participating in the largest Amarillo in Lanarkshire!!! Also performing were the Carluke Primrose Band, playing some traditional Scottish favourites. One of the other big highlights was the Mass Pipes and Drums, in which FIVE local Pipe Bands perform together in a large circle, to form one very big pipe band. The bands that made up the Mass Pipes & Drums were Lanarkshire Pipe Band, Lanark & District Pipe Band, Vale Of Clyde Pipe Band, the internationally renowned (and our good friends) Coalburn Pipe Band and also Parkhouse Pipe Band. The battle re-enactment also helped to give us an insight into some of Lanark and Scotland's darker past, as well as a good visual history lesson. Our international visitors may wish to know that Lanark, despite being a small and fairly inconspicuous town in the middle of Scotland, has a phenomenal wealth of history and treasures that are definitely worth discovering. The town boasts having one of Britain's oldest schools, it has been a Royal Burgh since 1142, it was the home of William Wallace and can certainly boast some of Southern Scotland's finest scenery. You can click on the big red button beneath this paragraph to talk about the Lanimers, Lanark or all matter of subjects. You can even blether with the Your Party Night DJs, since Art knows a thing or two about the history of Lanarkshire and much more besides. You can also post some of your own pictures of the Lanimers and even your own celebrations during the week. Simply e-mail your photos to us. All the photographs taken by ourselves are available for purchase, in print or CD-rom. If you wish to buy any of our photos, click here and fill out our form. Check out the links to other websites on the right hand side of this page, including the Lanimers very own website. Thanks for having Your Party Night at the Lanimer Day Celebrations. Special thanks to Jim Masters, John and their dedicated team, who arranged the booking and took on the immense challenge of organising all the events in the park. We also hope that, for certain members of the committee for Castlebank Park, that the VANIMER DAY celebrations on Friday are also good fun (!!??). Remember to tell us about it in our forum. |
